10 Things Writers Understand.

Now that I have (somewhat) successfully run UnorthodoxSimplicity for over a year and written 2 and a bit novels (with 1 fully published and another in the publishing works) I feel like I finally fit into the "being a writer" category. There are probably people who fit and suit the title of "writer" more appropriately than I, but I'd like to pretend that I fit in with the writing greats (*insert Emma sass*). I've been taking note lately of the things that have become a prominent part of my life recently and so, here's a list of 10 things (I believe) writers understand and totally agree with.
1. Writing is incredibly addictive: I never have a spare moment anymore because they are always filled up with writing. Whether it be adding onto chapters of my next book or writing a piece of short fiction to add to my portfolio, writing has become an intrinsic part of my life.
2. The majority of time is spent editing: I always thought that writers spent the majority of their time writing... it would make sense, right? Wrong. I feel as though I can zip through writing a chapter, but it may takes weeks and weeks of personal editing before I get it professionally edited.
3. Choosing characters names is one of the most stressful parts of writing: hats off to people who are easily able to name their children! I find choosing the name of a character ridiculously difficult and hate starting a new piece because I have to decide names for the characters.
4. Speaking of characters, it seems that all writers talk about their characters as if they are real: but I guess that's because they are real :)
5. There is always a word on the tip of your tongue that you will never remember: I am constantly trying to describe words to Google just so I can find the exact word I'm looking for... Unfortunately, I constantly have a word on the tip of my tongue and I can't go on with the sentence until I find the perfect word.
6. You begin analysing day to day activities: there's that meme that talks about an English teacher analysing blue curtains and what that means to the teacher vs. what the students see vs. what the author meant and this becomes a hilarious reality in my life. I begin wondering why things are certain ways and why things are certain colours - it can be very distracting!
7. Ideas can come to you at the most awkward/random moments throughout your day: I could be driving along and the best idea ever comes to mind, so I'll pull over and write it in my little "ideas notebook". Similarly, I've been lying in bed and an idea has come to mind. I wish good ideas would come when I'm sitting in front of my laptop attempting to write.
8. How proud you become of your own work: At first, I wasn't really proud of what I wrote and was more living off the excitement writing and producing novels was to me. However, in the past few weeks I've began to claim some self worth and see that hey, things wouldn't be getting published if they weren't good, right?!
9. The all-nighters you pull: because you get wrapped up in the story too much and end up writing chapter after chapter.
10. When you finally meet someone who "gets" you and your writing: I've made a personal choice not to overtly talk about my writing with friends and family for the reason that (and I don't really know why this is) I don't necessarily want the critique of those I care about of my work...
Have a great week :)
