Week 12: What were you thinking
the day you started blogging?
It was May 30th, 2014 - a Friday. I was in my
final year of high school and needed a hobby. And that’s exactly what this blog
started as, something to fill in time between school and work commitments. I
was working two jobs and finishing high school but I felt like there was
something more that I wanted to do. I had blogged a few years’ prior, but I
never stuck to it and sort of lost interest after a while – call it immaturity.
I vividly remember coming home from school on that Friday afternoon and having
about an hour spare before I had to get ready and head to work. I opened up my
Internet browser and found myself on blogger.com.
The blog started as Unorthodox
Simplicity – something I thought was anonymous enough and didn’t tie my
down to any particular theme or genre. I started with a blog post about my Senior
Formal that took place a few weeks prior. It was very basic and simple but it
set up the style that I wanted for my blog. I had started Unorthodox Simplicity as a platform to write an online diary that I
would never lose and could look back on years in the future. It was initially
made just for me and whoever stumbled upon it and I made a point not to
publicise it. I remember Google-ing how to change my Blogger theme and failing
miserably to try and upload it onto the website. I think because it was made as
a this is just for me and no one will
ever find it kind of blog, I never had any fears or never thought about oh what will I actually do if someone finds
this page. I went to work and came home around 11pm, I immediately checked
my blog to start writing another post.
That’s how it all started. None of this was planned. I thought that it would just be another ‘thing’ I
did for a month or so and got bored of. But nevertheless, here I am two and a
bit years later still blogging. We’ve had three name changes and will probably have
a lot more in the future. I know I say this quite a lot, but I’m so proud of
where I’ve been able to take this blog and the awesome opportunities that I’ve had
because of you guys, my lovely readers.
XO
