The Fault in Our Stars - A Letter to John Green

Saturday, June 07, 2014

I know that John Green (or even Hank Green) will probably never, ever see this but after seeing the TFIOS movie today I feel that this needs to be written and get off my chest.

Dearest John Green ,
With the release of 'The Fault in Our Stars' movie I feel the need to release a few questions surrounding the novel. Firstly, I cannot believe after all the hatred and ill-feeling toward Peter Van Houten throughout the novel and movie you yourself "Van Houtened" me, along with every other reader. John Green, you yourself wrote that there is an unspoken contract between the author and the reader, so I feel that you owe everyone answers; however I feel that if the answer is something like "that's the thing about pain, it demands to be felt" or "it's a metaphor" I will probably begin to cry and call you douchepants.

Just like Hazel and Augustus bonded over the wonders and the fate of the characters in 'An Imperial Affliction', I have united with a friend over the shared irritation about the absence of closure at the end of TFIOS! Now, we are both quite healthy, two-legged and have working lungs so I didn't expect to be flown to wherever you reside to meet you and discuss the importance of Swedish rap or even share a Scotch and Soda. But, a simple Youtube video, Tumblr post or tweet would suffice.
  1. What happens to Hazel Grace Lancaster? How long does she survive? Does she live out the rest of her days trying to leave a mark on the world? Do her tumours grow?
  2. Does Isaac ever get over Monica? Do they ever meet again?
  3. What happens to Peter Van Houten? Does he go to rehab? What about his assistant?
  4. What happens to Hazel's parents? Does her mother become a social worker? (What does Hazel's father even do?)
Now let it be known that I am as big of a fan of yours as anyone else. I've read TFIOS 12 times (yes, you read that correctly), and most of these questions have haunted me since the first time I shut your amazing book. I think I share some questions that the rest of the general public also has.

Sincerely yours,

Emma May

(P.S the movie was just as sensational as the book, thank you)
